September 20, 2005 - Possum Trifecta!
Posted by Zach Glenwright under Backyard Bag Feeder Project, Edited Feeds (SD), Possums
Not to sound like a complete moron here, but, “Hmm… 2 days, huh? I doubt it’ll come back a 3rd time!” So here I am again, one more time I decided to test my project with the ‘possums - but this time, I tried something a little different… or should I say a “big” different — as a test, I made a larger-form project with a larger piece of foam and a larger bag, to see if they would try to get to 3 different holes inside of the bag with bread in them. This time, I also put another camera outside, aimed at the project from the front. I exercised the “watched pot” theory again, and ignored the project for a few hours. Then I looked out the window at 4am - it looked different than when I put it out, again… but I couldn’t see if they actually got to the bread inside. When I looked at the current video source, I noticed a hole in the middle of the project… “I didn’t make a hole in it… so something must have come back again and got the bread out!” True, that! — once again, I had a possum visit the project, this time actually standing on it and tearing at it. This, although I’ve tried the same setup after this date, and I’ve had possums visit at least one or 2 days more past this, was the only time that a possum tore at the project itself. I’m not sure what motivated it during this night, and only in the middle hole. There was bread in all 3 different holes in the project (visible from the top) - but it only noticed the middle one… maybe it smelled the bread in the one hole and just went for it? If you watch the end of the video, the possum looks over the entire project for more food, but it doesn’t find anything, even though there is more in it! Very interesting, that — very interesting…
