July 11, 2006 - Fur in the Hole!
Posted by Zach Glenwright under Backyard Bag Feeder Project, Edited Feeds (SD), SquirrelsMy obsession of late with my Backyard Feeder Project is to get shots of squirrels (and birds of course, if they decide to come and steal a nut or 2…) from a smaller-than-them perspective… I call them “up-shots” - shots where you seem to be looking up at them from below instead of from above or straight-on (think Meerkat Manor)… So how have I been trying to get these shots, you ask? I’ve been digging… a lot… Right in the middle of my yard, in plain site, is a hole that’s about 1′deep and getting deeper every day… unsightly, yes (but so is that part of the yard anyway…!) Here is a test shot of that whole endeavor, complete with a squirrel checking out the “weird gray thing” looking at it looks like so far… it’s not quite an “up-shot” yet… but it’s starting to look interesting!

Hey… who’s that??
…and yes, I’m wearing sandals while digging a hole… I’m an idiot… ![]()

This is such a good idea that I have to ask if you’d object to a parallel experiment here? I don’t plan to dig a hole in my wife’s lawn, but I’m sure I could contrive something similar and see what the results are. But since it is your idea, I won’t even consider anything similar unless you’re agreeable.

Nah! No objections here… That would be cool to see a true “up-shot” of a squirrel - it would probably be easier to get it with a webcam-sized camera, because the smaller size lets it fit further down and get a better shot from that vantage point with less (or no…) digging… I’m still digging and digging meanwhile… my whole setup (with panhead and camera) is a little more than a foot tall, so getting a true “up-shot” with that setup’s going to take a hole half-way to China… or at least another foot or two down or so…

Great. Don’t hold your breath, life is complicated right now and time may not make itself available immediately, but I’ll get there.
BTW shouldn’t that be “fur in the hole”?

OK - cool… It’ll be cool to see, whenever it happens… it’s not like the squirrels are going to go on strike or anything ~
I like that title! (should have thought of that one…) - I think I’ll change it to a mixture of both of them!
