July 15, 2006 - Ah… The Joys of Yout’
Posted by Zach Glenwright under Birds, Edited Feeds (SD), Other Stuff, SquirrelsWith my feeder project done yesterday, all of the food gone, I sat panning my ground-level camera around the yard to see if I could find anything interesting to record…
In the trees? — Nah! No one’s up there!
At the bird feeder? No one’s eating…
OK - is there anyone here today?
Finally I found something — to the right there was a pair of squirrel kids playing around! You haven’t seen squirrel behavior until you’ve watched the kids play around. Jumping on each other, periscoping, asserting dominance… it’s a very, very interesting thing to see!

Squirrel fight!!
This particular “play session” lasted for 20 minutes! I’ve seen the kids play around before, but I’m not usually able to get such a good shot of them actually doing it… It’s usually a mad dash to get the tripod, grab the camera — “Tape! I need a tape!”, grab a tape, slam it in the camcorder and — “Oh @%*&! They left!” - but I was lucky this time!

Oh, the chairs! I forgot the shot with the chairs!
Thanks! I love watching them when they do that! As I was going to show this edit to someone else today, the kids were at it again right outside the window - of course this time, I didn’t have a camera ready. I’ve looked like an idiot running around for a camera enough during those times, so I figured, eh… just leave ‘em alone…

And just to add insult to injury today, while I was hosting my show, a half-tail squirrel came in (it’s the nuts.. it’s like crack to a junkie hehehe) and tried to make that it was my co-host. Well, I don’t take silent partners as co-host - even if they can squeak if they want to.
So once again, I had to open the back door and let it wander back into the garden in that skulking under a creepnet manner that Mr Furball did just a few weeks back. And again… close by, junior squirrel - who decided to hang around a while - so, I left the show running and filmed the delightful little charmer
I’ve since hidden the nuts - so that means I’ll get ‘em all kicking the window in in the mornng - great tits, blue tits and several narked squirrels!
Hehehehe..great weekend indeed… and ice for the birdbaths (although I should rightly call them ’squirrel watering holes’)

Hopefully he didn’t decide to co-host in the middle of a rejoiner - that would be funny!
