Now here’s an ambitious squirrel. Not content with just taking a nut, he decides he’s going to take the entire feeder. Luckily I had the foresight to tie it down, so he doesn’t succeed, but he sure tries. Eventually an entirely different squirrel gets the nut.

This post, as well as the pictures and video from it are © 2006 Chris Osborne, originally published on The Backyard Voyeur. The “Pillow Feeder” is his feeder project based on my (Zach Glenwright’s) Backyard Bag Feeder Project…

Hehe… you got to love it when they play with the feeder! “I’m going to get that nut!!!” I’ve seen grackles do the same thing here - they peck at the bag for 10 minutes straight to get a peanut, then finally give up… a squirrel then comes along and grabs the same nut in about 3 seconds…

Totally amazing stuff.. had the project not been secured, I’m pretty sure that a squirrel would’ve run off with it - no questions asked! (and probably found someplace you’d least expect to find it too…! lol)
Actually… it would be fun to see smaller feeder projects… suspended from something.. see how determined they *really* are!

Way back in the day, that happened to me all the time! One time, a squirrel started digging and ripping at the bag and it took the whole feeder out of the shot, only to bring it back 6 minutes later, all torn up! At least it was polite at returning it…
That shot is the reason I eventually started securing the bag to a piece of wood hammered into the ground…
I’ve never personally thought of doing the feeder project suspended from anything, but that would be an interesting thing to see - I wonder how they’d get to the stuff inside if they can’t get a grip on the bag though (or if it would have to be low enough to let them get a grip on it…) It sounds like a mixture of squirrel fishing and feeder projects…

Hmmmm … seems like we’ve all had the same idea, suspending the feeder … that’s the next step in my mind too … just have to figure out how.
