Five squirrels in the shot and I missed it … typical
Ah-ha! But I didn’t! Here are 2 short (the first one is a little longer, but not too much) videos from the end of the day yesterday that I had the opportunity to catch…

A group of squirrels, about 4 or 5 on Camera 8 (there’s another behind the pumpkin, and one in the swing), about 6:30pm or so EST (3:30pm PST), taken from Video 1

A squirrel trying to move the “pillow feeder”, taken from Video 2
Although written by me (Zach), the pictures and video in this post are © 2006 Chris Osborne, originally published on The Backyard Voyeur. The “Pillow Feeder” is his feeder project based on my (Zach Glenwright’s) Backyard Bag Feeder Project…

Thank you SO much for capturing those!
It’s interesting to see a squirrel trying to get into the bag when there’s nothing there to eat anyway … is this just play, I wonder, or practise for next time there are nuts in there?
I’m also very pleased at the quality of the feed, this one is being served from an ancient 400Mhz Pentium II machine that really shouldn’t be capable of serving a continuous feed at any speed anyway - all credit to Dell for making machines that just run and run, and I have no doubt that if it was running Windows XP it would have crashed long ago.

You’re welcome!
I’m not sure why they do that — some of my squirrels like to investigate the bag a little more when all the nuts are gone too, but I’m not sure why… They’re probably just playing around with it, but they could be checking for nesting material too… or scent marking it, making sure that it’s theirs the next time it comes back with more food? I’m not sure… It’s still interesting to watch them do that!
It’s nice that an old computer like that can still serve a purpose like that and still keep up with it - it might not be the fastest one in your setup, but it’s still worth it’s processing power in keeping up with the feed - and 15fps is very nice for a live feed if I do say so myself, old computer or not!
