November 24, 2006 - More airtime!
Posted by Zach Glenwright under Backyard Bag Feeder Project, Edited Feeds (SD), Squirrels, Vertical FeederI moved the entire Backyard Bag Feeder up the clothespole a little to see if the squirrels would acclimate to the new height - well, they didn’t seem to have any problems this time! You can see all of their attempts at besting the higher project in the video below…

Beta Tester
(thanks again to Chris Osborne for the caption…)
This feed was recorded on November 22, right before a huge rainstorm hit — it rained all night Wednesday, then all day on Thursday, so I didn’t have a chance to set anything major out on Thursday… I do have the Feeder Project out today (the 24th) though! I’ve done the following things to make it a little different…
• Change the shot - the shot’s now on a tripod, instead of the ground-level shot - having the feeder elevated kind of screwed the shot I’d get on the ground anyway, and with this setup, the exposure is a lot better!
• Change the project - on Wednesday, I had the Feeder project tied to the pole with wireties. Now it’s hanging from a wire and lightly secured on the bottom to the pole - this will be interesting to see if they’ll figure this version out (probably…)
• Add a mic - I added my shotgun mic to the pole, so that even though the camera is moved away from the shot, the sound won’t be compromised…

I have a caption for this one too: “Beta tester”

I have terrible troubles with QT sound; I either hear nothing at all or get a ghastly ongoing echoing which makes any sound unintelligible. It only happens with QuickTime, windows media is fine and all other system sounds etc. are fine too. I wonder if anyone else has this issue with QT?
By the way I have been looking in on the live feed but not seen any further action myself. It sure is windy there though!

I should just have you write all of my captions! That’s a lot better than just repeating the title again… I’ll change that later (with due credit, of course… :))
I’m not sure why QuickTime’s doing that on your system - which version do you use? The audio in the videos I’ve been posting is AAC audio, maybe that’s why (older version)? Maybe something’s not configured correctly in QT’s control panel? I checked Google and couldn’t find anything about that, so I’m not sure… is it all of QuickTime that does that, or just my videos…?
As for the live feed… aagghhh! I checked in at about 4:30 and saw that nothing much happened, and if you checked in at 2:11PST, which is 5:11EST, right about the time that it gets pitch-black, that means no squirrels tonight — that sucks… Of course, I could be wrong… but I doubt it. I’m sure it’s probably weather related or something of that nature that would be keeping them away, or maybe they need to re-re-familiarize themselves with it since I took it in yesterday. In any case, I’m going to leave everything out until it’s going to rain again, which shouldn’t be until next week some time, and I’ll keep the live feed going… I doubt the tripod’s keeping them away, as it’s about 5 feet back from where the camera was originally, but maybe that’s something to look into also…
…and it is really windy here today as you’ve seen!

According to the player I have QT version 7.1.3 and yes, I have this issue with anything QuickTime, but since I never normally have a use for it, it isn’t a problem. It may well be something to do with my laptop, which is an anonymous Chinese one probably made by 12-year old peasants in a sweatshop in Beijing (sorry, I mean “lovingly handcrafted using traditional oriental materials, will enhance and beautify your desk with the exotic style of the far east”).

Ah… ha… riiight… Well, that might be it, or QT’s installation might just suck on your computer… but if you want to try an alternative to QuickTime to play QT files, try VideoLAN Player - I’ve tried it with both QuickTime files and my RTSP stream and they both work fine, so that might be an option…
