I put the pillow feeder back up today, now on the restored Camera 1. I had to dash out, but before leaving, I came back into the house to take a quick look and make sure the camera was pointed in the right direction - and there was already a squirrel on the feeder! So I only had time to grab this quick clip but here’s the first squirrel of the day making the first hole in the bag and helping himself to the first nut. No doubt there will be more holes and a lot less nuts by this time tomorrow. I am leaving the trough birdfeeder on camera 4 as it’s also very popular with the squirrels and you can often see one on there, but the tray feeder is temporarily not on display as camera 7 is down until I feel like persuading Windows to recognise the drivers again.

This post, as well as the picture and video from it are © 2006 Chris Osborne, originally published on The Backyard Voyeur. The “Pillow Feeder” is his feeder project based on my (Zach Glenwright’s) Backyard Bag Feeder Project…

Oi!! Your squirrels never cease to amaze me! When I take my Feeder projects in for any length of time, it takes them days, even weeks some time to come back to getting interested in checking it out, if they get interested again, let alone working with the complexities of the design - yours go right for it! Last week, I took the bag feeder inside for one day — it took them from Friday, when I put everything back out again, until mid-Morning today just to get interested again! (which I’ll be posting later, when I get some time to edit it down) Amazing!! Very cool shot, by the way — I’ll be checking in tomorrow morning (unless it’s already wrecked by that time) to see what goes on then!

Amazing how a squirrel can always look desperate for a nut or three or four or five… and have the capacity to remember where that food source is…
“Squirrels can’t remember nothin’” I heard once… yeah right… this site, Zachs excellent footage and the fact that my squirrels over the last 12 months have all been regulars proves that they ‘do’ have the capacity to remember where they leave stuff (unlike most teenagers… hohum lol!) and also associate smell with areas where food is in good supply (and to help them dig up their buried nuts)
Wow.. I sound like a book on the subject! I’ve got to be totally frank and honest and say that it’s only been in the last 12 months that my interest in squirrels has really taken off in a massive way… totally…!
This site has helped, as too has the squirrel board, youtube and of course flickr.com!
I’m officially ‘a nut’…long may it continue lol!
At least it’s healthier than some pursuits and it’s something that can be shared among other potentially interested parties. Jeez.. every time I watch anything on here I can’t help but admit that it heightens my passion towards the furry collective we call ’squirrels’ and all I’ve learnt is going to be helpful if not useful some day…
I admire this footage because that li’l cute bundle of fur, claws and teeth really got stuck into that bag feeder! They’re all stars.. worthy of names up in lights one day..
